Although it went virtually unnoticed in the mainstream media, Peru took a monumental step in perserving and protecting their natural resources and amazing agriculture. The decree that goes into effect on April 15th 2012, is set to ban all Genetically Modified ingredients from anywhere within the country for one full decade and then the decision will be reviewed again.
They worry the introduction of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) will compromise the native species of Peru, such as the giant white corn, purple corn and, of course, the famous species of Peruvian potatoes. Anibal Huerta, President of Peru’s Agrarian Commission, said the ban was needed to prevent the ”danger that can arise from the use of biotechnology.”
We applaud the decision that Peru has taken! It is refreshing to see a country that is worried about its national resources and agriculture and recognizes the danger companies such as Monsanto can pose to the genetic survival of certain species. We hope to see more countries in the near future following suit and one day the worlds crops can once again be free of any tampering!
Nujima customers can also breath a sigh of relief after hearing this as we import a lot of our products from Peru directly! You can rest assured now knowing that none of the products that are imported from Peru are Genetically Modified Organisms!
